THE CLIENT MEETING AND THE BRIEF

As written by Leigh Jackson, Lead Designer

DU Waterscapes place themselves as the first choice for pond and water feature design, construction and maintenance in the Devon and Somerset area. They endeavour to cater for every aquatic need that their clients may have and do so with a wealth of experience in both academic and practical skills to create stunning designs.

A briefing was arranged face to face with the client to discuss their potential ideas and thoughts, so I could understand what their requirements were in order to full fill the brief.

Certain elements were agreed on what would not work, such as imagery and both the design team and the client were on the same page in this regard.

A clean and simple design that could be utilised across a number of applications from websites, signage to vehicle graphics to clothing. I made sure I enquired what symbols or elements they may like in their logo and a lot of typical garden elements were mentioned, such as fish, frogs etc.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

I produced a series of options for the client using typical elements and also others that have not been mentioned such as dragonflies and newts etc. I wanted to convey in the logo icon that the business was a "water landscape"  business. The difficult part was finding that image to tie the elements together. I found this in the Lilli pad illustration. This recognisable shape could then be utilised with a myriad of animals/insects etc.

I decided to recommend the dragonfly design as this had an almost regal feel to it. A sense of premium quality, but also friendly approachable look and feel with the use of two different typefaces. The end purposes of the logo design were to launch the new logo across a new website, stationery and vehicle graphics. With this in mind, I wanted to keep a bright and simple colour pallet that could be used on dark or light backgrounds. I gave the client a series of designs in various colourways to demonstrate this point. The designer recommended logo was chosen with no amendments and the second phase of the job was given the green light - the vehicle design: DU Waterscapes Vehicle Design
