New Business Signage for Nantes Solicitors at Poundbury House, Dorchester

Nantes Solicitors needed new signage for their offices at Poundbury House, on the edge of Dorchester. The building's entrance sits under a distinctive arched canopy, which previously displayed the building's name. 

Replacing the old signage meant working within the constraints of an existing architectural feature. The new fascia had to hold its own against the arch's curve and scale, in a material and finish that best represented a professional practice.

The challenge

While Nantes needed signage with presence and dimension, it also had to fit within the proportions of the arch itself rather than overwhelm the architectural feature.

The building also has a second visible surface at its arched glazed frontage, a short distance from the main entrance. That gave Nantes a further opportunity to reinforce their identity beyond the entrance canopy alone, so a visitor sees the practice's name from more than one angle on approach.

Away from the building, two separate needs had to be met on the ground. Visitors arriving by car needed clear, early direction to parking, and the accessible route needed a physical marker at the point where it isn't obviously visible from the car park or the main path to the door.

The solution

Creative Solutions produced a raised letter acrylic fascia sign for the entrance canopy, replacing the previous "Poundbury House" signage with dimensional lettering for Nantes. Raised acrylic letters stand proud of the surface they're fixed to, giving the fascia a shadow line and sense of depth that flat printed signage doesn't achieve. The dimensional finish was chosen specifically to give the practice's name presence against the scale of the arch.

A matching fascia panel was fitted to the building's arched glazed frontage, carrying the same lettering style onto the second visible face of the building. The two signs work together, so the identity reads consistently whichever direction a visitor approaches from.

Away from the entrance, a post-mounted sign was positioned to direct visitors to parking as soon as they arrive on site, removing the guesswork for first-time visitors. A wall-mounted directional sign, fixed to the boundary wall near the entrance steps, marks the accessible route at ground level, where it's needed.

The outcome

Visitors get clear direction to parking on arrival, and a clearly marked accessible route. For a solicitors' practice, a visitor's first impression often forms in the car park, before they've even reached the door.
