Large Stand-Off Lettering and Logo Installation for Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy

THE CLIENT

The Lyme Regis based Boat Building Academy is an instantly recognisable building standing next to the harbour and beachfront. It provides full-time, highly practical skills training with an emphasis on ‘hands-on’ learning. The school was founded in 1997 by Commander Tim Gedge.

In recent years the Academy has developed a programme of furniture making courses that share the same philosophy as the boat building training; intensive and highly practical development of skills.

THE BRIEF

The Boat Building Academy team got in contact to commission some large signage to be added to the blank face of the building facing the moored boating area on the beach, and walkway from the town centre to the beachfront.

The lettering and logo creation needed to be spotted from quite a distance, and the large expanse of white wall offered a great canvas to super-size the display!

To give the lettering a buffer from the high-strength sea winds, and long-lasting protection against UV damage over the years, it was decided to use large 45mm high, 5mm thick lazer-cut acrylic for the lettering and logo, and snapfix locators to allow for wind and rain to easily circulate and drain off the signage. These locators are a super-adhesive, and mean signage can be attached to all types of textured surface without needing to drill into the walls whilst offering years or service.

THE SOLUTION

As with all large signage installations of this scale, when you are close up to the design it is hard to see imperfections and less than straight application. The large template applied to the wall has been measured and sized to perfection by our brilliant in-house design team to fit the space and also allows for recommendations in size, font and spacing.

The lettering was created from Dark Blue Acrylic sheets, lazer-cut to the chosen font. Due to the size of the logo size needed, it needed to be artistically recreated to be cut into 3 easier sections, not only for installation at height, but the weight limit of each snapfix locator.
