THE CLIENT

Exeter City of Literature

In 2019, Exeter was bestowed with the prestigious UNESCO City of Literature designation, recognising its exceptional contributions to culture and creativity, as well as its abundant literary heritage, achieved through a collaborative city-wide effort.

Since its inception, Exeter City of Literature has been actively engaged in collaborative endeavours with various partners throughout Exeter & Devon, while also fostering connections with their fellow Cities of Literature worldwide.

Exeter City of Literature received a GWR Community Grant to commission new artwork at Exeter St Davids, commemorating the city's UNESCO designation and Devon's rich literary legacy. Community groups were actively involved in shaping the artist's brief, contributing to the design process.

The artwork was officially revealed on World Book Day in 2024.

Artwork Panels on Exeter St Davids Footbridge & Lift Footbridge

THE BRIEF

Large Format Panel Printing

The Executive Director of Exeter City of Literature engaged us to print nearly 20 artwork panels, each spanning 3 to 4 meters, for the footbridge walkway at Exeter St Davids train station, emphasising local collaboration and service provision.

The panels had to endure heavy foot traffic from daily GWR commuters while vividly showcasing the designs by local artists Billy Ruffian (Isabel Keen) and Jack Ratcliff, requiring robust construction.

Crafting the latest literary artwork supported by GWR, Exeter City of Literature opted for a PVC-free Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) that would feature an equally PVC-Free printed vinyl panel overlay, finished with  a protective long-lasting anti-graffiti laminate. This innovative choice not only celebrates the city's UNESCO status and Devon's literary heritage but also underscores the commitment to sustainable practices.

We sourced a premium quality PVC-Free Dibond-like Aluminium Composite Material with a recyclable core and teamed it with an equally PVC-Free self-adhesive printable media and matching overlaminate available in a matt or gloss finish to create the long-lasting and sustainable panel displays.

THE SOLUTION

PVC-Free ACM Flat Panel Printing

ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) is commonly used for versatile and durable signage. It's ideal for flat and dimensional signs, channel letter signs, architectural signage, directional signs, and way-finding systems. ACM signage is weather-resistant and offers high-resolution graphics, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.

The sandwich structure of the aluminium and core material provides rigidity, strength, and durability while remaining lightweight. ACM panels are widely used in the construction industry for exterior cladding, signage, and architectural features due to their versatility, weather resistance, and ease of installation. Additionally, they are available in various colours, finishes, and thicknesses, making them suitable for a wide range of aesthetic and functional applications.

We also provide professional installation services for your convenience, ensuring a seamless and hassle-free experience from start to finish!

Located on the footbridge and lift footbridge, the artwork is now accessible to commuters travelling through Exeter St David’s, inviting them to immerse themselves in its beauty. We're unbelievably delighted with this project and hope you are too!
