Donated Window Graphics for the Lyme Billy Model Railway Project

THE CLIENT

An Axminster Community Project

Nearly 60 years after it closed, trains will once again run on the famous old Axminster to Lyme Regis railway. This time, however, the magic of the six-mile branch line will come from a large model that is to be built and displayed as a modern-day attraction for Axminster.

The project is being planned in a partnership between Axminster Chamber of Commerce, the Community Waffle House, Axminster Community Shed and Axminster Heritage Centre. It has already won support from the South Western Railway and the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, both of whom have agreed to commit funding.

THE BRIEF

Creating A Local Attraction

The project is seen by the team planning it as a key element in the drive to increase visitor footfall to Axminster, and in doing so support local businesses. It follows close on the heels of the Axminster Banners project and community picnic benches on the Minster Green, both instigated by the Chamber of Commerce. The project also celebrates one of Axminster's key strengths as a railway town with links to both London and the wider West Country.

Working closely with the project team was our main contact for the project, local Graphic Designer, Early Bird Graphics, who was able to supply a wonderfully simple yet highly visible design that could stretch across all 4 external facing windows. So as not to obstruct the model that would be visible through the windows, the graphics were kept monochromatic in a white finish, and would be placed just above the eye-line to allow curious viewers to look inside with ease.

For the Lyme Billy Model Railway attraction it was decided to keep the design highly simplified to gain attention, but not distract from the live model railway inside. We used a professional grade window graphic vinyl made specifically to handle the daily change in temperature and high UV exposure. These graphics are applied inside, plotted in reverse to show the correct way around when viewed from outside.
