Outdoor Interpretation Panel for Mary Anning Rocks in Lyme Regis
Mary Anning Rocks needed a durable outdoor information panel to help visitors learn more about Mary Anning, her life, her work, and the Jurassic Coast landscape she is so closely associated with.
Positioned on the seafront in Lyme Regis, the panel had to do several jobs at once. It needed to be clear enough for visitors to read at a glance, robust enough for an exposed coastal location, and visually engaging enough to sit comfortably in a high-footfall public space overlooking the sea.
The challenge
The project centred on the production and installation of a long-format interpretation panel, designed to share information about Mary Anning, the Jurassic Coast, local coastal protection work, and the Mary Anning Rocks campaign.
As the panel would be installed outdoors in a coastal environment, material choice and fixing method were key considerations. The finished sign needed to remain stable, readable and professional in a location exposed to changing weather, sea air and regular public use.
For this type of project, products such as flat panel aluminium signs, printed aluminium signage and outdoor plaques offer a practical route for creating long-lasting, information-led displays.
The solution
Creative Solutions produced and installed the outdoor interpretation panel directly onto the existing seafront structure, creating a secure, low-profile display that complements the wall's shape rather than competing with it.
The artwork was designed as a wide, illustrated information panel that combines text, maps, historical context, and visual storytelling. The format allows visitors to engage with the information at their own pace, whether they are stopping briefly on a walk or spending time exploring the history of Mary Anning and the local coastline.
As with many outdoor signs, the installation needed careful planning. The panel was fixed neatly and securely along the full width of the display area, with visible mechanical fixings used at regular intervals to hold the sign in place and support its long-term use in a public setting.
What we delivered
The completed project included:
-
A wide-format outdoor interpretation panel for Mary Anning Rocks
-
Production of a detailed printed sign panel with illustrated content, maps and visitor information
-
A durable panel suitable for an exposed seafront location
-
Secure mechanical fixings across the full length of the sign
-
Careful on-site installation in Lyme Regis
-
A finished display designed to support education, tourism and public engagement
The outcome
The finished panel gives visitors a clear and engaging way to learn more about Mary Anning while standing in the coastal landscape that shaped her story.
Its position overlooking the Jurassic Coast gives the display real context. Rather than simply presenting information, the panel connects the content to the view in front of the reader, helping people understand the relationship between Mary Anning, fossil discovery, Lyme Regis and the wider coastline.
For Mary Anning Rocks, the result is a practical, public-facing interpretation sign that supports their educational aims while adding value to a well-used visitor location.
