Why our laminate isn't a vinyl overlay

Cheaper custom printed whiteboards are made by printing a design onto vinyl and sticking that vinyl onto a whiteboard surface. That vinyl can lift at the edges, trap dust and bacteria, and fail under repeated alcohol cleaning. Our boards are built differently: the print is applied directly and sealed under a dry-wipe laminate bonded to the surface, so there are no edges, no bubbles, and no hidden germ traps. It's the reason the 47 boards we installed at the Royal Devon and Exeter Wonford Hospital are still in place four years on

Ghosting, cleaning and longevity

What's the difference between a printed whiteboard and a vinyl overlay?

A vinyl overlay is a printed vinyl film stuck onto an existing whiteboard or blank steel sheet. It can lift at the edges, trap dust and bacteria underneath, and fail under repeated cleaning. Our printed whiteboards are built differently: the design is printed at 900dpi and sealed under a bonded dry-wipe laminate. There are no edges to lift, no bubbles, and nothing to harbour germs. It's the reason our boards specify well for NHS wards and other environments where infection control matters.

What's the difference between magnetic and non-magnetic?

A magnetic board has a steel backing, so it accepts magnets, printed magnetic tiles, and colour-coded status markers. It's the default choice for hospital wards, production lines and any setting where the information on the board changes visually throughout the day. A non-magnetic board uses a lighter backing and costs less. It's the right choice when the board is purely for writing and erasing, such as a meeting room, a study area or a home planner.

What's the difference between framed and frameless?

Framed boards have an aluminium edge, a pen tray and wall fixings included. They look finished straight out of the packaging and are the standard choice for offices, reception areas and schools. Frameless boards sit flush to the wall with a low-profile edge, which gives you the maximum writing area in a given footprint. Frameless panels can also be butted together to create continuous whiteboard walls of any size, which is popular in modern classrooms and creative studios.

What sizes are available?

Our standard sizes run from 600 x 450mm up to 2400 x 1200mm, with 900 x 600mm, 1200 x 900mm and 1800 x 1200mm the most popular. If you need something different, we produce custom sizes to your specification, and frameless panels can be joined to cover full walls. Handheld A4 and A3 versions are available for classroom and training use, starting from £29.99.

What's the different between your standard and premium laminate?

Our standard 5-year laminate handles daily use and common drywipe pens comfortably. Our premium 7-year laminate is more resistant to aggressive cleaning products, lower-quality pens, and extended heavy use. If your board will be written on by people whose pens you don't control, such as on a hospital ward or in a shared school space, the premium laminate is the safer specification. For a meeting room or back-office planner, the standard laminate is usually the right choice.

Ordering, Artwork & Delivery

How does the ordering process work?

Choose the size and style of board, add your quantity for volume discount, and place the order online. Upload your artwork at checkout, or send it to our design team if you'd prefer us to build the layout for you. We produce a digital proof for your sign-off before anything goes into production, so you can check placement, colours and text before it's printed. Once you approve the proof, we print and deliver.

What artwork format do I need?

Print-ready PDFs in CMYK with 3mm bleed on all edges are ideal. High-resolution JPEG, PNG, AI or EPS files are also accepted. If you don't have artwork, our in-house design team can build a layout from a sketch, a photograph of an existing board, or a description of what you need. A design fee applies for bespoke artwork and is usually a small addition to the order total.

Can I see a proof before you print?

Yes, always. Every custom printed whiteboard order includes a digital proof. You can request amendments to text, grid spacing, colour or layout before we commit to print. We don't start production until you've signed off the proof, so nothing gets printed that you haven't seen.

How long does delivery take?

From artwork approval to delivery, our standard lead time is around ten working days. Our Express Service produces frameless and framed magnetic boards on a shorter turnaround from £58 when you need it sooner. Lead times on larger quantities, custom sizes or mobile whiteboards can extend by a few days depending on production load, and we'll confirm the exact timing when we take the order.

Do you offer volume discounts and 30 day accounts?

Yes on both. Volume discounts apply from small quantities upwards and are shown on every product page. We offer 30-day credit accounts to UK schools, academies, NHS trusts and government bodies against a purchase order, which speeds up procurement for public sector buyers. How long will the board last?

Our standard laminate carries a 5-year guarantee and our premium a 7-year guarantee, both covering the writing surface. In practice, the 47 boards we installed at the Royal Devon and Exeter Wonford Hospital have been in daily clinical use for over four years with no surface failures. The limiting factor for a printed whiteboard is usually the pens used on it, not the laminate.

Which pens should I use, and will red pens mark the surface?

Standard drywipe markers in any colour work on our boards. During development we specifically tested our laminate against cheap red drywipe pens, which are the most common cause of staining on printed whiteboards from other suppliers. Our laminate held up against every one we tried. If you'd rather use a pen we've tested, we supply a drywipe pen accessory pack.

Can I clean the board with alcohol or clinical disinfectants?

Yes. Our laminate tolerates the alcohol-based and disinfectant cleaners used in clinical environments. For day-to-day use, a dry board eraser or a damp cloth is enough. For deeper cleans, a whiteboard cleaning spray will lift any pen residue without damaging the surface.

Will the surface ghost over time?

Ghosting (faint marks that remain after wiping) is the most common complaint on cheaper printed whiteboards. Our laminate is formulated to resist it, which is why it's specified by hospitals that write on the same board continuously across shifts. If ghosting does occur from a specific pen, a whiteboard cleaner usually lifts it. If it doesn't, the laminate guarantee applies.

Is the surface safe for use in children's bedrooms or schools?

Yes. The laminate is inert once cured, doesn't off-gas, and wipes clean with standard cleaning products. The frameless and handheld versions are particularly popular in schools and children's bedrooms because there are no protruding frame edges.

Case Study Spotlight: The Royal Devon & Exeter Wonford Hospital

When we were searching for the perfect dry-wipe product we probably tested over 100 materials until we found one that was right for our custom printed whiteboards.

We had a job for The Royal Devon and Exeter Wonford Hospital that required 47 custom printed whiteboards of various sizes, most being 1800 x 1200mm. We felt we had the best product to provide them; we tested around 10 pens and they did not leave a mark on the custom printed whiteboard. We went on and produced the bespoke printed whiteboards to the designs, all individually tailored to each hospital ward. These designs for the whiteboards were done in house to keep the costs of creating the bespoke whiteboards as low as possible.

All the pens that we supply work superbly well on (the now standard) custom printed whiteboards! However, we encountered a problem because nurses are allowed to bring in their own drywipe pens, so there is no control over where they are purchased. Unfortunately, some drywipe pens, especially cheap, red drywipe pens, can be of very low quality and will mark pretty much any drywipe surface.

After extensive testing, we found a laminate that worked with every single pen we threw at it. We produced a sample custom printed whiteboard for the busiest ward at Wonford Hospital and asked the nurses to write on the whiteboard whenever they passed it. We left this sample whiteboard in place for 4 weeks to make sure that it worked. When we returned to check the sample, there was not a mark on the bespoke printed whiteboard.

We reprinted the whole print run and laid new custom prints onto the whiteboards. They have now been in situ for 4 years and we have produced many more as new wards are opened
