Custom Printed Wallpaper for The Tudor Arms

The CLIENT

The Tudor Arms is a large, family-run free house, located alongside the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal, and a mere stone’s throw from the world-renowned Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

Built in the 18th century, The Tudor Arms started life as a licensed beer and cider house; a watering hole for the Irish Navigator Soldiers who were tasked with the arduous job of hand-digging the nearby canal.

Today, it is a fully-licensed free house—with luxury bed and breakfast facilities in the adjacent Tudor Arms Lodge—and multiple winner of the Campaign for Real Ale’s “Gloucester Country Pub of the Year”. The premises has six different dining areas, a games room, and two bars which offer a wide range of cask ales— including a guest cask, keg ales, stouts, lagers and ciders.

THE BRIEF

Creative Solutions were approached by the owners of the Tudor Arms with an interesting design brief. They were looking for us to supply fully printed wallpaper, in order to create a feature wall for the pub’s interior. The theme of the print needed to be something that reflected the Tudor’s rich history as a beer and cider house; and its present-day renown as a place where one can still drink genuine, old-fashioned cask ale.

As its heart, The Tudor Arms is a traditional English country pub, and the design and colour scheme needed to conform to that idea.

THE RESULT

We initiated the process by supplying the client with print samples of our material range. From there, they opted for a smooth satin finish, which is the ideal design choice for a public area such as this. The natural paper feel of the product does not overwhelm the space by being too reflective or polished, while the image remains razor-sharp in stunning high-definition.

We also informed the client that there are a number of different backings available for self-installed wallpaper. In this instance, the Tudor Arms went for the pastable version, but there are many options to choose from.

We are always happy to offer advice on installation, and a guide is available in PDF form on our website. Creative Solutions also offers installations where required.

As far as the actual wallpaper design goes, the client was advised that they could select an image from Shutterstock and we could then purchase it on their behalf to complete the artwork. The final design of the traditional beer casks was certainly in keeping the Tudor Arms’ brief; the sepia tone is understated and the images of the cellar has a traditional feel to it. Perfect for this historic building.
